The Carnivore Diet

It’s been nearly 6 months being on a Ketogenic Diet and I feel great. I eat one meal a day most of the time. I have done a 48-hour fast recently just before a blood test for my cholesterol follow-up appointment, which should be coming up shortly. I don’t expect there would be a significant change in the HDL & LDL numbers, but I am expecting the Triglycerides to be lower. I have found that my blood sugar is affected by ‘The Dawn Phenomenon’, where it is higher in the morning. I now test my blood glucose in the late afternoon/evening and it’s usually just about 5 mmol/l. Blood Ketones are around 1 - 1.5 mmol/l.

I’ve now decided to transition to the Carnivore Diet where I will just eat meat and some dairy (I do like cheese) and drink lots of water and black coffee & herbal tea. I’ve been studying this diet for the past month and have tried it a number of times in the past 2 weeks. Now that I have cleared my fridge out of the vegetables I used to eat, I’m ready to start the 30-Day Carnivore Diet Challenge.

This is where I got my information from:

Then I went on to my favourite Education TV Channel, YouTube and found more resources and joined some Carnivore groups on Facebook for more information.

These days I hardly eat carbs. My carb intake is very likely to be below 20 grams per day. I’ve got to the stage now that I don’t fancy eating them nor do I fancy them. I find that I now prefer savoury foods over sweet foods and I cannot believe that I don’t miss chocolates, considering that I was chocoholic once upon a time needing to eat chocolate daily!

My weight has remained at 52.4 kg for over 3 months despite the amount of fat I eat. I do enjoy belly of pork.

In the beginning, while my body was adapting to the Keto way, I did experience mild constipation. However, I seem to have got over that. I have found that I don’t go daily like I used to because it isn’t necessary. What is passed out is a lot smaller in size and quantity. This got me thinking about my dogs when I had them. They were on a natural raw meat diet and had hardly any carbs other than the small amount of treats. Their ‘poos’ were a lot smaller and they looked a lot healthier than those of other dogs. I think the idea that one should eat more fibre is inaccurate as fibre only adds more traffic to the queue. I believe that eliminating carbs and fibre can only help the excretion of waste in the body.

In the past couple of weeks trialling out the carnivore diet a few days a week, I found that constipation was not an issue for me. OK, I did not go daily, but when I did, I did not strain and there wasn’t much to be excreted. I believe that being on a carnivore diet creates less waste product. So I’ll see how I get on this month. Some of the meals I had when I trialled the Carnivore way were:
• 1 piece of belly pork cut up into small cubes and fried. Then I would fry a 350 g piece of steak in the oil. Season it with salt and pepper.
• 1 piece of 300 g salmon fried in the fat from the belly pork.
• 1 pack of 250 g minced beef and a couple of fried eggs fried in the belly pork fat.
• I also made a chicken liver pate. I bought a pack of chicken livers that was going cheap, cooked it in the belly pork fat, blended it with heavy cream. It was very filling - I couldn’t eat it all in 1 go though.

Some of the benefits of doing the carnivore diet for me are:
• Convenience: Since I eat once a day, I only to cook once and just 1 or 2 items of food.
• Time-saving: I can skip 90% of the aisles in the supermarket, just focusing on the meat & dairy aisles.
• Health: I believe this is a healthy way for me. I feel good. My energy level is high. My body is lean. My muscles are intact.
• Cost: I’m not wasting money on buying ‘rubbish’ foods.

I've been teaching yoga since 2009 and always had an interest in healthy living.

Having recently been diagnosed with elevated cholesterol, I went in search for ways to lower it. In my search, I came across the Ketogenic diet.
