It is the eighth moon (month), the Harvest Moon, in the Chinese lunar calendar and it is the 2nd most important festival that is celebrated by the Chinese after Chinese New Year.
The number 8 is an auspicious number for the Chinese hence this is a popular month to get married as well.
Today the Chinese around the world celebrate Harvest Moon Day usually by feasting on a variety of food including the Moon Cake and walking around with candle lit lanterns.
This takes me back to my childhood in the 60s when our mother accompanied us on our walk in the neighbourhood with our candle-lit paper or cellophane lanterns made in a variety of shapes of animals.
Today, I will just enjoy the mooncake I bought recently in Leeds.
I came across this video of how Moon cake festival is celebrated these days. It seems quite extravagant compared to how we did it over half a century ago!
