Day 13 Press Up Challenge | 72-Hour Fast

26/11/2020

Why I’m doing a 72-hour Fast

A 72-hour fast sounds excessive. I’m doing it to keep my immune system strong and healthy. It’s a way to increase my growth hormones. It also helps to stimulate the brain by increasing the neuro-endocrine hormone called Norepinephrine. Find out more in this video: https://youtu.be/PRcTrRrcupg

Fasting is a way that allows your body to burn the stored fat. When the body is fat adapted, meaning that it is not using sugar as the prime source of energy, fasting can be quite easily achieved without experiencing hardship.

People fast for a variety of reasons:
  • Weight loss
  • To reverse Insulin resistance/Type 2 Diabetes
  • To get into a state of Ketosis (fat burning mode) – (16-24 hours)
  • To get into a state of Autophagy – (17 – 72 hours)

High sugar diets deplete the body of
  • Magnesium
  • Potassium
  • Copper
  • Calcium
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin D
  • B-vitamins

Day 12 Press Up Challenge | Diet & Bone Health

25/11/2020

Today I present a study showing the link between the consumption of animal protein and bone health. https://bit.ly/33bj2Ll

Contrary to public belief, it is animal protein that is important for bone health, and not just calcium. The bone is made up mainly of protein with calcium and other minerals to make it stronger.

Meat, including fish, is the best source of protein on the planet and have long been our natural ancestral diet.

Besides keeping your bones healthy, meat is satisfying and keeps you satiated longer, which means you don't have to snack in between meals.

Eat real food.
Get & Stay Healthy
Boost your Immune system.

Day 11 Press Up Challenge | Fruits, Fructose & The Liver

24/11/2020

Most of us believe that the consumption of Fruits & vegetables is an important part of our diet.

Since being on the Carnivore Diet, I’ve not missed eating fruits and vegetables. My system has got used to not consuming all that fibre you find in vegetables.

The danger with eating too much fruits is that you can consume too much sugar. The sugar in fruits is made up of sugar and fructose. Too much fructose can adversely affect the liver.

Fruits that are very high in sugar content are dried fruits especially raisins, dates, apricots, figs which have between 55 and 75 grams of sugar per 100 grams. These should really be avoided.

The fresh very sweet fruits such as bananas, figs, grapes, cherries, mangoes, Kiwi & pineapple should also be avoided if your body does not tolerate carbohydrates, ie you experience an insulin surge. These fruits contain between 12 and 20 grams of sugar per 100 grams of fruit. These days most of the fruit we get are engineered or manipulated to be sweet.

The next category of fruit that can be eaten in moderation are apples, blueberries, apricot, orange, grapefruit, which have between 9 and 11 grams of sugar per 100 grams of fruit. They are not as sweet as the previous category, but they are still sweet and can cause insulin spikes.

The low sugar fruits are raspberries, blackberries, strawberries and lemon are safe to eat on a regular basis.

Of course, age, metabolism, genetics, activity level and insulin sensitivity play a part in how the body deals with sugar.

Day 9 Press Up Challenge | Autophagy & the Respiratory System

22/11/2020

What is the purpose of stimulating autophagy?

Main reasons
• Detox – rids infections, pathogens, viruses, bacteria from every cell in the body.
• Cell regeneration
• Activates immune system
• In the respiratory system, it can lengthen the cilia, which is responsible for clearing pathogens

I believe it is important to get into a regular state of autophagy. I believe this keeps the immune system healthy and strong to defend the body from the threat of viruses and disease.

Some ways that you can stimulate autophagy are:
• Intermittent fasting (between 17 and 72 hours). This is easily achieved if you follow a low-carb diet.
• Give up smoking
• Stress less
• Sleep well
• Eat real food

Here is the research connecting autophagy to improved respiratory function.

Day 6 Press Up Challenge | The Egg is Good Food

19/11/2020

Nearly beat my previous record, but not quite there! I'll keep trying.

A couple of days ago, the media produced the headlines that egg consumption is associated with an increased risk of diabetes. That does not make sense to me because there are hardly any carbohydrates (sugar) in an egg and we know that it is starchy carbs that push up insulin causing diabetes in the long run.

The study that was conducted was an observational research and not a controlled study. Here is the link: https://bit.ly/3fcpNBc

I believe it is what that is consumed with the eggs that potentially cause diabetes, like toast, bread, potatoes, fruit juice.

Eat your eggs - they are real food and good for you. They are reasonably cheap, filling, nutritious. They are a whole food.

So, eat real food to get & stay healthy and build a strong immune system to fight off disease.

Day 5 Press Up Challenge | Autophagy and the Immunity

18/11/2020

Autophagy primes your immune system.
you can stimulate autophagy with intermittent fasting (between 17 and 72 hours). Autophagy is the body’s way of cleaning out damaged cells, in order to regenerate newer, healthier cells. It's like changing the oil in your car.

Autophagy helps to regulate cytokines and it also makes you more insulin sensitive.

"The immune system plays a critical role in fighting off SARS-CoV-2 infection, however, deregulated immune response may result in immunopathology and impaired pulmonary function [7,8]. Autophagy is a potential cell surveillance system that plays a pivotal role in the regulation of both innate [9] and adaptive immunity [10]. Induction of autophagy can potentially promote the immune system [11,12]. Targeting the immune system as well as the cellular processes (here, autophagy) that regulate immunity could offer a strategic tool against SARS-CoV-2 infection."

My Day 3 Press-Up Challenge

16/11/2020

Yes - I beat my Saturday record!
It's all in the video.

Those of you contemplating switching to a low-carbohydrate way of life could ask yourself this morning before having breakfast, the so-called "most important meal of the day", if you are really hungry.

I asked myself the question, "Why should I eat if I'm not feeling hungry?" These days, I only eat when I'm hungry, and that's usually once a day.

I feel great. I'm healthy and strong. I live on a meat-based diet - no fruits (full of sugar - fructose), minimal quantities of vegetables (mushrooms mainly and sauerkraut) and some nuts.

48-hour Fast

15/11/2020

So I’ve done a 48-hr fast.

I took a rest from the Press-up challenge. (See my post yesterday and the day before).

I broke my fast with some fried bacon fat (taken mostly from Bill’s bacon), 2 rashers of bacon, 1 Duck Egg and a Smoked Kippered Mackerel and finished off with my usual cream + Cream cheese pudding. This will keep me going for a good 24 hours or so.

I took my blood readings before eating and am pleased with them. Blood glucose: 4.4 mmol/l and blood ketones 1.2 mmol/l. I was expecting better, but it’s good enough to effect autophagy, the body’s way of cleaning out dead and damaged cells in order to generate newer, healthier cells.

I’ll resume my press-up challenge tomorrow and hope to beat my record of 36 or 37 I did yesterday in 1 stretch.

Uric Acid & the Low Carb Lifestyle

22/6/2020

Following a low carb, high healthy fat diet can help to lower uric acid levels, amongst improving other health markers.

I have followed the Low Carb Healthy Fat diet since September 2019 and introduced it to my husband early in 2020 when he saw the benefits I was enjoying, ie, fat loss leading to a drop in a dress size. I did not push him into following this way of eating knowing how he loved his carbs, especially bread and potatoes. I continued to publicise what I was doing and the success I was getting on social media. I also made shared YouTube videos from a variety of sources showing the health benefits that can be achieved from following this way of eating.

My husband has an underlying cancer (CLL) that is presently under control. However, because it is a blood cancer, other cancers do tend to pop up, like melanoma that he was diagnosed with and treated for last year. The lump reappeared in his neck towards the end of last year, which was removed in March this year and he is now undergoing a course of radio-therapy to mop up any stray cells. With this in mind, I shared posts about how sugar feeds cancer, ie, the hidden sugars from carbs. I guess some of these posts caught his attention and early this year he decided that he would try and reduce his carb intake.

When he had 2 lots of chemotherapy a few years ago, he was prescribed the drug 'allopurinol' to treat gout, which is usually caused by an elevated uric acid level. Eventually he discontinued the drug. About 12 months ago, a routine blood test revealed that his uric acid levels were elevated and once again he was prescribed 'allopurinol' to control it. Another blood test a couple of months later revealed no change and the doctor suggested he increased the dose, which he did. Towards the end of the year, when I learnt about the connection between a high carb diet and metabolic dysfunction, I suggested he drop the drug and reduce his intake of carbs, which he did early this year.

Today we had a phone call from his doctor to review his prescription. She indicated that his uric acid level is normal. Bill has been on a lower carb healthy fat diet for over 5 months. The blood test was done a couple of months ago. The proof is in the pudding. A low carb healthy fat diet can improve uric acid levels, amongst other conditions.
